Urban Heat Islands Flashcards
1
Q
What is an UHI?
A
An urban area that is typically warmer than other rural areas
2
Q
Why are urban zones typically warmer in the city/town centre?
A
There are more buildings in the centre of a town or city and due to the building materials (concrete tarmac steel brick etc) all absorbing heat then re-radiating it in the evening and at night
Also due to all the factories and cars producing heat this can contribute to the high temperatures
3
Q
Why is it cooler in rural areas?
A
Because the large buildings aren’t present that are capable of emitting vast amounts of heat energy
