CS - Toyota Burnaston Flashcards
Describe the location of the Toyota industrial location
The industrial branch is located in Burnaston, just south-west of Derby
It is located near the main roads A38 and A50
Also close by are the motorways M1 and M6
Why did Toyota choose Derby?
There is a large area of a land available for expansion
It is in the EU so exports in Europe are tax-free
There is easy access to Birmingham and Derby where many car part industries are located
There is a local workforce available with engineering experience
What are the positive impacts of the construction of the industry?
It has created many jobs - meaning workers can spend money in the local area (Burnaston) to keep shops and services open
As a result of the company’s passion to sustain it’s reputation, it has sponsored local events and teams such as Derby County
Many other companies who provide for Toyota have also set up factories, thus creating more jobs
Apprentices and training programmes are available with Toyota increasing local education levels
What are the negative impacts of the construction of the industry?
The land it was built on was a greenfield site and has removed farmland
The factory itself is very large and considered an eyesore by many
Much more noise and air pollution has been created in the local area
Some local buildings were lost including a pub
What are the cons of an MNC (Multi-National-Corporation)?
They can pull out at any time, which could leave a large void of jobs
Decisions made about the area are being made in Japan
The highest paying jobs have gone to only Japanese managers
The local area can also become heavily reliant on the industry. However when business is receding, not as many cars may be needed, thus, not as many are needed to be produced resulting in a loss of work hours which would greatly impact the local economy
