When did the Bangladesh floods occur?
July and August 2007
What were the physical causes of the Bangladesh floods?
900mm of rainfall fell in July which saturated soils increasing run off into rivers
Peak discharge from both the river Brahmaputra and Ganges happened at the same time
What were the human causes of the floods?
The construction of buildings on the rivers flood plains and deforestation
25% of Bangladesh is only 1m above sea level
What were some effects of the floods?
2000+ deaths
Rivers were polluted with sewage and rubbish
25 million made homeless
44 schools destroyed
Factories closed
Livestock killed
112,000 homes destroyed
10,000km of roads destroyed
What responses were made to try and resolve the effects of the floods?
Bangladesh has 85 monitoring stations for foods (floods warnings can be issued 72 hours before)
6000km of man made leveés in Bangladesh but aren’t well maintained and can often be breached by flood waters
Instead of trying to stop flooding completely, flooding is allowed in certain areas under controlled conditions
