CS - BEDZED Flashcards
What is BEDZED?
Beddington Zero Energy Development in Wallington near Croyeton in London is the largest carbon-neutral eco community in the U.K.
What are some facts about BEDZED?
It’s made up of 100 apartments and houses as well as offices and workplaces and was built on a brownfield site
BEDZED homes use 81% less energy on heating
45% less electricity
58% less water
Than an average British home
They also recycle 60% of their waste
What are 12 of the main ways in which BEDZED save energy etc…
Using building materials that store heat in warm weather and release it at cooler times
Using natural recycled or reclaimed building materials
Building homes facing south to maximise ‘passive solar gain’
Backing the office to the north so there’s less solar gain and no need for air conditioning
Using 300mm insulation jackets on all buildings
Producing at least as much renewable energy as is consumed
Using heat from cooking and everyday activities for space heating
Energy tracking meters
Roof gardens on homes
Rainwater harvesting
Promoting the green transport plan - walking cycling etc
ZEDcars sharing club for when people need to use a car
What are the successes of BEDZED? [5]
It reduces carbon emissions from cars and vehicles
Reduces hot water usage
Reduced electrical usage
New job opportunities
Redeveloped brownfield site
What are the failures of BEDZED? [3]
Noise pollution from the wood chip boiler
Water is still pumped in as water recycling is too expensive
Homes still need heating
