When did the Sheffield Floods take place?
On the 25th of June 2007
What were some human causes of the flood?
Sheffield city council had not maintained the drainage systems
Flood plains had been built upon which lead to tributaries being squeezed into narrow channels
What were some physical causes of the floods?
15th of June 90mm of rain fell over a 48 hour period
25th of June 100mm of rain fell in just 24 hours over already saturated ground
Three rivers run through Sheffield - Don, Sheath and Rother
What were the effects of the floods?
2 people died
100 cattle were washed away
13,000 homes were left without power
1 in 5 homes were effected
£3 billion worth of insurance claims were made
Meadowhall was flooded and some shops had to close for over three months
Ulley Reservoir was damaged
What were the responses to the flood?
6 sea king helicopters were used to rescue flood victims
Clearing of debris, vegetation and trees
Improved flood defences e.g. raised walls
Developers were encouraged to make flood proof houses
Tighter regulations on where new buildings could be built
