CS - Palm Oil in Indonesian Rainforest Flashcards
What are the positive impacts of Palm Oil plantations in Indonesia?
They provide both jobs and income for local communities.
They also provide cheap vegetable oil for consumers all around the world.
What are the negative (local) effects of Palm Oil plantations in Indonesia?
The reduction of areas covered by natural forestry and vegetation is pushing species such as the orangutan to extinction - These areas that had once substantial biodiversity, have now become mono-cultures.
Also as a result of this loss of natural vegetation, the capability and capacity of water retention in these areas is significantly reduced meaning that water shortages have occurred in the area.
What are the negative (global) effects of Palm Oil plantations in Indonesia?
The reduction in vegetation means that their is a less effective carbon sink, therefore less carbon dioxide is being absorbed - contributing towards climate change and global warming.
Additionally, the forest fires that are sometimes used to clear land for plantations also emits C02 into the atmosphere - also contributing towards climate change and global warming.
Why is Palm Oil in such high demand?
The Palm Oil fruit is in high demand as it is rich in natural vegetable oils that are used in a variety of food products.
Their is also an increased use of Bio-Fuel consumption and use meaning the demand for oils etc has become larger.
