What are some problems caused by tourism in the Peak District?
Tourists drop litter which is unsightly and can harm animals
Many tourists do not stay on footpaths thus creating erosion on either side and/or damaging crops
A lot of employment is only seasonal due to the majority of shops being tourist based
Many tourists have purchased second homes. This means that many houses are vacant for long periods of time leading to rural depopulation and service decline
Some tourists leave farm gates open allowing animals to escape
The large demand from tourists has caused local inflation
What are some benefits of tourism in the Peak District?
Job creation (tourism creates 14,200 jobs in the Peak District)
Income (generates over £600 million every year in the Peak District)
Improved infrastructure and facilities which is necessary
Protection of historical landmarks and stricter building regulations in general
Improved reputation and image
What is being done by the council to prevent the negative effects from tourism?
Events all year
Improved footpaths and footpath signs
Increased fines for people who litter and more bins
Improved public transport especially park and rides so people can park their cars outside the national park
A redistribution of tourists (advertisement of different sites within the park so people are spread out more
