CS - Tropical Rainforest Flashcards
Describe the location of the Amazon Rainforest
A tropical rain-forest biome located in the North of South-America that has a constant high temperature and rainfall
How does the nutrient cycle work?
Trees in the rain-forest grow rapidly all year round
This allows leaves to drop and be decomposed by micro-organisms
This decaying vegetation allows nutrients to enter the soil which is absorbed by shallow roots, resulting in rapid growth of plants and trees.
How does the rain-forest water cycle work?
Daily convectional rainfall falls over the rain-forest
Trees intercept most of the rain
However some rain seeps through and reaches the ground
The trees then take up this water
The excess water then evaporates into the atmosphere
Describe the four main layers of the rainforest
Emergents - The tops of the tallest trees, tall trees are able to catch more sunlight
Canopy - Leafy environment home to many species, the upper part of most trees are typically found here
Under-Canopy - Little sunlight, saplings wait here for longer trees to die so they can take their place
Shrub layer - Very dark and gloomy atmosphere, not much vegetation
What are the pros of deforestation?
Income for small communities
Space for cattle ranches
Room for building factories, farms, housing, dams etc
What are the cons of deforestation?
Less vegetation (nutrients) Loss of habitats Loss of biodiversity Global warming Broken nutrient cycle
What are some ways in which deforestation in the rain-forest is managed?
National Parks More Police (Cops And Loggers) Heli-Logging Afforestation/Reforestation Selective Logging Agro-Forestry
