Unusual Bacteria Flashcards
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis
Trans: Air droplets
Can’t be phagocytized due to unique cell wall
Protective granulomas formed due to the production of cytokines
Mycobacterium Laprae
Trans: coughing or sneezing or prolong close contact
Obligate intracellular parasite
Seems to be genetically based, 95% people naturally resistant
2 Form
- Tuberculoid- discrete lesions well organized granulomas few bacilli
- Lepromatous- several nodular or diffuse lesions containing many poorly organized granulomas
Mycobacterium marinum
Trans: exposure to small cut or scrape, found in fresh and saltwater
Signs include reddish or tan skin with granuloma
Nocardia asteroids
Trans: inhalation of dust
Produces virulent form of pneumonia
Actinomyces
Anaerobic
Live in spaces between gums and tough
Forms painful abscesses in the mouth, lungs, breast or GI tract,
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Trans: air droplets from sick people
walking pneumoniae
Mycoplasma genitalium
Trans:sex
In women: pain during sex, bleeding from vagina, dishcarge
In men: urethritis, stinging or burning during urination,
Ureaplasma
Trans: sex, passed from mother to fetus
part of normal bacterial pop.
Rickettsia
Trans: arthropod bite
multiply in the endothelial cells of small blood vessels( vasculitis)
Regional lymphadenopathy
Chlamydia
Obligate intracellular parasite
Depends on host for ATP and NAD
Complex life cycle with two main cell type
I. Elementary body(EB): Infectious form
II. Reticulate body(RB):replicative form
