What are children’s services?
Free services for under 18’s provided by the local authority eg. Lincolnshire County Council to support vulnerable children and young people, their families and young carers. The local council’s children’s department works closely with other providers such as social services, health visitors and with health and education providers
What is the aim of children’s services?
- Ensure safeguarding is maintained, as a priority
- At risk list, careful reviewing and monitoring
- Holistic care, following a needs assessment
- Access centres for supervised visits
- Out of school hours children’s provision to support parents
- Practical help such as parenting classes
- Legal requirements for fostering and adoption
- Referrals to other professional’s eg. speech therapy
What is local authority youth work?
Outreach youth work, mobile for areas of antisocial behaviour
Usually part-time and evening work, in a club
Paid by Local Authority
Have set programmes to deliver such as ASBO consequences and giving consent
What is foster care?
Last resort, kinship care is preferred
Respite, short-term or long-term
Legal proceedings or parents voluntary consent
Professional or voluntary carers
Partnership working
Supervised visits with family
Prior to a permanent adoption
Up until 18 year-olds or 24 if SEN
Aftercare independence package
What are children’s homes?
Not for Under 10’s
Behaviours deemed a risk to others, such as violence or binge drinking
Known sexual abuse, may be a risk to others
Absconding issues
Own room but shared facilities
Staffed by social workers
Maybe temporary
What support does young carers support give?
Respite care
Group trips and time out
What is community centre support?
Community Centre offers….
Teenage parent support
Managing difficult behaviour support
Weaning and breast feeding
Supporting your child with maths
Parenting classes
Funded before and After school care
What is the Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)??
Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) maintained by a local authority which is specifically organised to provide education for children who are excluded, sick, or otherwise unable to attend a mainstream or special maintained school.
