What is the definition of diathesis
A hereditary or pre-disposition to a disease or disorder including a mental disorder
What can trigger mental health issues in someone with a diathesis?
Stressful events for example abuse, divorce
What criticism is there of the stress diathesis model?
New study suggests that genetic risk becomes less important as people experience more traumatic events
What is a genetic predisposition
the increased chance of developing a disorder or disease based on your genetic makeup
What is the definition of susceptibility
Where an individual is at risk of getting a disease because of their genetic make up
What is cancer
Where cells in a certain part of the body grown and reproduce at an uncontrollable rate, these abnormal cells then divide to create even more abnormal cells
How has diabetes diagnosis changed over time in the NHS
50 years ago, most people had type 1 that is genetic. Now, environmental factors have meant more people have type 2. E.G - bad diets, too much sugar, overweight, leads to diagnosis
What factors can lead to high cholesterol
Smoking, drinking, not exercising, being overweight
Can high cholesterol be inherited?
Yes
How can you lower cholesterol?
Exercising regularly, improve diet, stop smoking, reduce alcohol consumption
How is high cholesterol diagnosed
Blood test
What is high blood cholesterol
A fatty waxy substance, found in cells of the body. Too much of this can build up in the artery walls and lead to diseases such as heart disease
