What does self concept mean?
This is how the individual sees themselves and how the individual believes others sees them.
NOTE - ALWAYS define self image and self esteem in the same answer as self concept for exam marks!!!
What could lead to a child having high self esteem?
In infancy:
praise from parent / carer
praise from learning a new skill e.g. walking
Early childhood:
praise from parent / carer
praise at school for achievements
accomplishing a task or skill
What factors could lead to low self esteem in early childhood or adolescence?
Early childhood:
being bullied
parents arguing / seperating
not having or making friends
struggling with school work
Adolescence:
being bullied
social media
peer pressure
parents arguing / seperating
not having or making friends
struggling with school work
physical appearance
poor school achievement (e.g. exams)
teenage pregnancy
Factors that can impact self esteem in adults (high and low)
career (progression or no progression)
family life and pressures
finances
romantic relationships
friendship group
social media / digital footprint
