Psychological disorder
Significant disturbance in an individuals cognition, emotion, regulation or behavior
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Extreme inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity

States that Psychological disorders have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated, and in most cases cured through treatment in hospitals
DSM-5
Widely used system to classify disorders, includes definitions, medications, and labels sometimes change
Immigrant paradox
Immigrants who immigrate to United States are less likely to have mental disorders than thise who are born in America
Anxiety disorder
Worry anxiety or fear that reflects on daily life
Generalized anxiety disorder
Person is continually tense, apprehensive, and in a state of automatic nervous system arousal
Panic disorder
Unpredicatvle minute long episodes of intense dresd in which a person experiences terror, chest pain, choking and others. Often followed by worry of possible next attacks
Phobia
Irrational fear and avoidance of object, activity, situation
Social-Anxiety disorder
Intense fear of social situations
Agrophobria
Fear and avoidance of crowds and open spaces; where one feels loss of control
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
Obsessive repetitive thoughts and actions to stop those thoughts
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Environmental triggers Memories, nightmares, social withdrawls that happen after a traumatic experience
Posttraumatic growth
Positive psych changes as a result of struggling with extremely challenging circumstances and life crises
Mood disorders
Emotional extremes; highs and lows
Major depressive disorder
Due to absense of meds symptoms include depressive mood or loss of interest and pleasure
Persistent depressive disorder
Showing depressive mood for at least 2 years
Mania
Hyperactive state, overly optimistic and increased creativity as well as thoughts snd sexual desires
Bipolar disorder
Person alternates between mania and depressive mood
Linkage analysis
Examine dna from unaffected and affected family members to see difference in chromosomes
Rumination
Consistent repetitive thinking and worrying about problems and causes
