Adaptive/Assistive Devices
Any kind of tool or device that can simplify caregiving or make the environment safer for the ill, disabled or elderly.
ADL’s
Activities of Daily Living
ie: eating, dressing, bathing, walking, etc.
Amputation
Loss or removal of a body part such as a finger, toe, hand, foot, arm or leg
Amputee
Someone who has lost a body part through surgery or accident
Disability
Any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult to do certain activities and/or interact with the world around them
Extension
Movement that increases the angle between two body parts
Flexion
Movement that decreases the angle between two body parts
Handicap
A disadvantage in filling a role in life relative to a peer group.
Mobility Skills
The ability of a patient to change and control their body position.
Occupational Therapy
Health program that uses meaningful activities/equipment to help people of all ages prevent, lessen, or adapt to disabilities.
Passive Range of Motion
Range of motion being provided to a patient who is unable to do it on their own
Phantom Pain
Pain sensation coming from a body part that is no longer there
Physical Therapy
Medical treatment used to restore functional movements, such as standing, walking, and moving different body parts.
Prosthesis
Man made replacement of a body part.
Rehabilitation
Care that can help you get back, keep, or improve abilities that you need for daily life.
Restoration
Returning to a normal or healthy condition.
Restorative Nursing Care
Nursing interventions that promote the resident’s ability to adapt and adjust to living as independently and safely as possible.
Rotation
The action or process of turning a body part.
Self-care deficit
An inability to perform certain daily functions related to health and well-being, such as dressing or bathing.
Speech Therapy
Therapeutic treatment of impairments and disorders of speech, voice, language, communication, and swallowing.
Spinal Cord Injury
Damage to the bundle of nerves and nerve fibers that sends and receives signals from the brain.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Happens when a sudden, external, physical assault damages the brain.
