A feeling of irritability or severe restlessness.
Agitation
Apprehension, tension, or uneasiness that stems from the anticipation of danger, which may be internal or external.
Anxiety
A disruptive and uncontrolled behavior triggered by anger, irritability, and hostility.
Catastrophic Reaction
Mental processes that take place in the brain, including thinking, attention, language, learning, memory and perception.
Cognition
When a person has trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect their everyday life.
Cognitive Impairment
A decline in our ability to think, learn and understand.
Confusion
A serious change in mental abilities, resulting in confused thinking and lack of awareness of someone’s surroundings.
Delirium
A false belief based on incorrect perceptions about reality.
Delusions
A false perception of objects or events involving your senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.
Hallucinations
Walking at a steady and consistent speed, especially back and forth and as an expression of one’s anxiety or annoyance.
Pacing
Repetitive and continuous behavior, speech or thought that occurs due to changes in cognitive skills.
Perseveration
A state of confusion occurring in the late afternoon and lasting into the night.
Sundowning
A state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation.
Stress
Something that causes a certain symptom or reaction to occur in a person who has a disorder.
Triggers
Involves communication with a therapist who accepts the disorientation of a person with dementia and validates his or her feelings.
Validation Therapy
