Sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain, leading to neurological damage.
CVA - Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke)
Being aware of oneself and one’s surroundings, including thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
Conscious
Bluish discoloration of the skin or mucous membranes caused by low levels of oxygen in the blood.
Cyanosis
Directive that no life saving measures are to be taken if a person is found without pulse or breathing.
DNR - Do Not Resuscitate
Difficulty swallowing.
Dysphagia
Vomit
Emesis
Container to hold expelled vomit.
Emesis Basin
Brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.
Epilepsy

Epistaxis
Brief loss of consciousness due to a drop in blood flow to the brain.
Fainting (syncope)
Help given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment is available.
First Aid
Paralysis on one side of the body.
Hemiplegia
Excessively high blood sugar.
Hyperglycemia
Excessively low blood sugar.
Hypoglycemia
Occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is blocked.
Myocardial Infarction - MI
The feeling of needing to vomit.
Nausea
Blood pressure lowering upon sitting or standing.
Orthostatic Hypotension
The uncomfortable feeling of not being able to breathe enough or deeply enough.
Shortness of Breath (SOB)
A life-threatening medical condition that occurs where the body does not have enough blood circulating to meet its needs.
Shock
Temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, causing stroke-like symptoms that resolve quickly. Also known as a “mini-stroke.”
TIA - Transient Ischemic Attack
Not being aware or awake, either physically (as in a coma) or mentally (being unaware of something).
Unconscious
Sensation of motion or spinning that is often described as dizziness.
