Unit 4 (Interpersonal Processes) - Bystander Effect Flashcards
What is the bystander effect?
When the presence of others reduces the likelihood of an individual offering help
Who was Kitty Genovese?
A woman who was murdered and 37 people witnessed the murder but didn’t call for help
Causes of Bystander Effect (4)
Diffusion of Responsibility, Audience Inhibition, Social Influence, Cost Benefit Analysis
Diffusion of Responsibility
When there are more people present, bystanders are less likely to help as they expect others to act instead
Audience Inhibition
The presence of others make the potential helper feel self-conscious, or may fear being judged
Social Influence
If others seem disinterested in helping, the potential helper may take it as a social cue that the situation is not one that warrants help
Cost Benefit Analysis
When an individual weighs up the benefits and risks before helping. An individual will help when benefits outweigh risks
