Unit 3 (Learning) - Operant Conditioning Flashcards
Operant Conditioning
A type of conditioning where learning occurs from consequences of behaviour
3 Elements of Operant Conditioning
ABC - Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence
Antecedent
The stimuli or event that occurs before the behaviour
Behaviour
The action itself (thing being learnt)
Consequence
The stimulus applied after the behaviour (either reinforces or punishes).
Associated Scientist
B.F Skinner
What was B.F Skinner’s Experiment
Rat in box learns to press lever for food
4 Types of Consequence
Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Punishment
Antecedent in Skinner Experiment
The Lever
Behaviour in Skinner Experiment
Pressing the Lever
Consequence in Skinner Experiment
Getting a food pellet
Positive Reinforcement
The addition of a pleasant stimulus that strengthens behaviour
Negative Reinforcement
The removal of an unpleasant stimulus that strengthen a behaviour
Positive Punishment
The addition of an unpleasant stimulus that weakens a behaviour
Negative Punishment
The removal of a positive stimulus that weakens a behaviour
