Unit 3 (Memory) - Forgetting Flashcards
Forgetting
The inability to remember previously stored information -> can occur due to errors in encoding, storage or retrieval
Encoding Failure
Failure to remember information because it has not been adequately encoded and transferred to long-term memory
Retrieval Failure
The inability to access previously stored information because of lack of appropriate retrieval cues
Interference
When memory retrieval is disrupted or interfered by other memories
2 Types of Interference
Proactive & Retroactive
Proactive Interference
The ability to recall new information is disrupted by old information
Proactive Interference Example
Entering a new password but accidently typing your old password
Retroactive Interference
The ability to recall old information is disrupted by new information
Retroactive Interference Example
You get a new phone number so it is difficult to remember old phone number
