Unit 3-Lesson 4 Flashcards
Explain Darwins Finches
- Differences in beaks allowed some finches to
- Successfully compete
- Successfully feed
- Successfully reproduce
- Pass successfully traits onto their offspring
Explain the LaMarckian vs. Darwinian view
-
LaMarck
- in reaching higher vegetation giraffes stretch their necks and transmits the acquired longer necks offspring
-
Darwin
- giraffes born with longer necks survive better and leave more offsprings who inherit their long necks
What is the Big idea 1?
The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life
What are the lines of evidence that support Darwins ideas?
- Fossil record
- Artificial Selection
- Anatomical evidence
- Comparative hemoglobin structure
What is the Homologous Structures?
Similar structures that have changed to suit that environment. Common ancestor.
What is the Analogous Structures?
Similar structures that evolved separately in response to similar environmental pressures
What is convergent evolution?
Organisms that look similar and have similar adaptation without a common ancestor
What is parallel evolution?
Organisms that evolved independently without a common ancestor at the same time
What are Vestigial organs?
Vestigial structures are various cells, tissues and organs in a body which no longer serve a function. These features would have been used by an ancestral species
