Unit 2-Lesson 5 Flashcards
Who is Gregor Mendel and how did he contribute to genes?
Greger Mendel is a Austrian Monk who provided answers to the question “how are traits inherited”
What is a gene?
A gene is a piece of DNA that directs a cell to make a certain protein
What is an Allele?
An allele is any alternative form of a gene occurring at a specific locus on a chromosome. Alleles are often represented by letters
What does homozygous mean?
describes two alleles that are the same at a specific locus
What does heterozygous mean?
describes two alleles that are different at a specific locus
What is a Genotype?
A Genotype refers to the makeup of a specific set of genes
Example: Tt, Rr, bb
What is a Phenotype?
A Phenotype is the physical expression or appearance of a trait.
Examples: tall, round, blue
How are dominant allele expressed?
Dominant Allele: is expressed as a phenotype when at least one allele is dominant.
How are recessive allele?
Recessive Allele: is expressed as a phenotype only when two copies are present
