Unit 1-Lesson 9 Flashcards
1
Q
Name and describe the 2 body planes
A
-
Radial Symmetry:
- a body plan that can be divided along any plane, through a central axis, into roughly equal halves
-
Bilateral Symmetry:
- a body plan that can be divided into mirror halves only along one plane through the central axis
1
Q
List the characteristics that can be used to classify animal
A
- Symmetry and body planes
- Number of body layers
- Body cavity
- Segmentation
- Movement
- Reproduction
2
Q
What are Germ Layers?
A
layers of cells in a developing embryo that give rise to specialized tissues
3
Q
Name and describe the 2 body cavity
A
- Coelom: digestive tract and other organs suspended in a fluid-filled body cavity (Ex. molluscs, insects, vertebrates). Called coelomates
- Acoelomates: do not have a coelom (Ex. corals, jellyfish and flatworms)
4
Q
What is segmentation and what are the advantages of having segments on your body?
A
segmentation is the division of the body into repetitive sections, or segment
- Advantage:
- if one segment is damaged, the other segments can still function properly
- Also mobility is more effective because segments move independently
5
Q
What are the differences between a Vertebrates and Invertebrates?
A
-
Vertebrates
- animals with a dorsal backbone or notochord. Function to protect dorsal nerve chord.
- Example: fish, amphibians, birds and mammals
-
Invertebrates
- all other animals without a backbone
