Unit 1-Lesson 3 Flashcards
What are the 3 Domains of life?
Archaea
Bacteria
Eukarya
What are the characteristics of the domain Archaea?
- They are the first life (they have been around the longest)
- Prokaryotic
- Habitat - harsh environments (they want really harsh environment, the ones that would normally kill other cells; for example a volcano)
- Sewage treatment plans
- Very salty water
What are the characteristics of the domain bacteria?
- Prokaryotic
- Habitat - all environment (but not the extreme ones like archaea)
- Some are beneficial (helps us break down the food - by helping us break down our food they feed themselves)
- They can also get us sick (infection, food poisoning)
- Many don’t hurt us, most do nothing, and some also helps us
What are the characteristics of the domain Eukarya?
- Eukaryotic
- Kingdoms: Protista, fungi, planta, Animalia
- Multicellular for most except for Protista (it doesn’t have much)
- Was around when a lot of evolutionary change was happen
What are the 6 Kingdoms to life?
- Archaebacteria
- Eubacteria
- Protista
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Archaebacteria?
Cell number
- unicellular
Cell type
- prokaryotic
Feeding type
- autotroph
Organisms
- archaea
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Eubacteria?
Cell number
- unicellular
Cell type
- prokaryotic
Feeding type
- autotrophs and heterotrophs
Organisms
- E.coli
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Protista?
Cell number
- most unicellular
Cell type
- eukaryotic
Feeding type
- autotrophs and heterotrophs
Organisms
- amoeba, paramecium, euglena
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Fungi?
Cell number
- unicellular and multicellular
Cell type
- eukaryotic
Feeding type
- heterotrophs
Other info
- cell walls made of chitin
Organisms
- molds, mushrooms
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Animalia?
Cell number
- multicellular
Cell type
- eukaryotic
Feeding type
- heterotrophs
Other info
- no cell walls
Organisms
- birds, fish, dog
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Plantae?
Cell number
- multicellular
Cell type
- eukaryotic
Feeding type
- autotrophs
Other info
- cell walls made of cellulose
Organisms
- plants, flowers
What is a Cladogram (Phylogenetic tree)?
Diagram showing how organisms are related based on shared derived characteristics such as feathers, hair, or scales
