Unit 1-Lesson 5 Flashcards
What features do all protists share?
All protists share these features
- All are eukaryotic
- Most are unicellular
- Reproduce asexually by binary fission
- Some reproduce by conjugation
- Found in moist environments: fresh and salt water, moist terrestrial environments, some animal fluids
What are the 3 sub categories that the Kingdom Protista can be divided into?
- Animal-like Protists
- Fungus-like Protists
- Plant-like Protists
What are the characteristics of an animal-like protists?
- Often called protozoans
- Heterotrophic
- Unicellular
- Some are parasitic and cause human diseases (example: malaria caused by the protozoa Plasmodium)
What are some examples of animal-like protists? (4)
Amoebas, Paramecium, Flagellates, and Sporozoans
What are the characteristics of a fungus-like protists?
- Resemble fungi in appearance and lifestyle (both produce spores) but they differ from true fungi at the cellular level ex. cell wall
- Heterotrophs
- Unicellular
What are some examples of fungus-like protists?
- Water mould
- Slime mould (plasmodial and Cellular)
What are the characteristics of a plant-like protists?
- Photoautotrophic
- Unicellular or multicellular
- Contain chlorophyll
- Important part of aquatic food webs
What are some examples of plant-like protists?
Euglena, Diatoms, Dinoflagellates
