Unit 1-Lesson 7 Flashcards
1
Q
List the characteristics of a Plant?
A
- Eukaryote and multicellular
- Autotrophic
- Reproduce sexually; can also produce asexually
- Cellulose in cells walls; similar to algae
- The photosynthetic colouring for land plants is chlorophyll
2
Q
What are some supportive and anchoring structures for plants?
A
Stems and roots
3
Q
What is the Vascular (nutrient transport) system?
A
System of conductive tissue that transports water (xylem) and sugars (phloem)
4
Q
List the characteristics of Bryophytes
A
- Non-vascular plants (depend on diffusion/osmosis)
- Include mosses, liverworts, hornworts
- No roots, flowers or seed present
- Grow in low, tangled mats in moist, shaded areas
5
Q
List the characteristics of Pteridophytes
A
- Seedless, vascular plants
- Include whisk ferns, club mosses, horsetail, ferns
- No flowers or seeds present
- Grow taller than bryophytes in moist, tropical areas
6
Q
List the characteristics Spermatophytes
A
- Seed-producing, vascular pants
- Roots, stems, and leaves present in different varieties
- Reproduces by means of a protective seed which contains the plant embryo
7
Q
List the characteristics of a Gymnosperms
A
- Produce “naked” seed exposed on the surface of cone scales
- Ex. pines, spruces, cedar (conifers)
- Thin, needle like leaves with waxy cuticles for hot/dry summers, cold winters and moderate rainfall
8
Q
List the characteristics of Angiosperms
A
- Flowering pants
- Produces seeds enclosed by fruit
- Ex. roses, trilliums, birch, maple oak tree, grass, wheat, weeds, etc.
- Since the fruits are enclosed by a fruit, animals can eat the fruit then secrete as waste so that the plant can grow
