Unit 1-Lesson 8 Flashcards
Why is Fungi important?
They are the major decomposers on earth, they form symbiotic relationship with plants
What do humans use fungi for?
Production of Alcohol
Nutrition
Penicillin and genetic engineering
What are the 3 structures if fungi?
Hyphae
Mycelium
Fruiting body
Describe the Hyphae part of the Fungi structure
they are the structural units that make up the body. Multicellular and made of thread-like filaments
Describe the Mycelium part of the fungi structure
branching network that live in the soil and on other nutrients substances
Describe the fruiting body part of the fungi structure
reproductive structure (spores) and the part that is visible above ground
They are 4 ways fungi can get their nutrition, name and describe each
- Parasitic: absorb nutrients from the living cells of a host organism
- Predatory: soil fungi whose mycelia trap prey in the soil
- Mutualistic: have relationship with other organism. The mycelia increase the abortive surface of the roots and the fungus receives sugar from the plant
- Saprobial: feeds on dead organisms or organic waste
Out of the 5 major Phyla name 2 and list their features
Deuteromycota (Fungi Imperfecti)
- diverse, -
do not reproduce sexually,
- Ex. mould penicillium, soy sauce, cheese
Basidiomycota (Club Fungi)
- includes mushroom, puffballs, and bracket fungi,
- most are decomposers,
- some form symbiotic relationships with plants
