What is otitis media vs otitis media with effusion?
An inflammatory disorder of the middle ear; usually caused by a blocked tube or fluid in ear which presents with infection symptoms VS fluid in the middle ear spsace without symptoms of acute infection
What are risk factors for otitis media?
Crowded condition (daycare)
Smoke
Other infection
Excessive swimming
Down syndrome
Cleft palate
Propped bottle feeding
What is the diagnostic evaluation and prevention for otitis media?
Prevention: no submersion, hold semi-reclined when feeding
Diagnostic: down and back for under 3, up and back for over 3yrs
What is the management of otitis media?
Surgery
Antibiotics
Treat fever
What are s/s of RSV
Rhinorrhea
Fever
Coughing
Poor feeding
Irritability
Lethargy
Respiration problems
Possible ear/eye drainage
How to prevent RSV
IM injection of palivizumab
What is the management of RSV
Isolation
Hand hygiene
Do clustered cares
PPE
Positive pressure room
30-40 degree angle with neck slightly extended
Cool, humidified O2
Medication (not antibiotics)
Fluids - IV
What are s/s of cystic fibrosis
Fatigue
Chronic cough
Vitamin A, D, E, and K deficiency
Recurrent UTI
Sticky, thick mucus
Hypoxia
Abdominal distention
Rectal prolapse
meconium ileus (failure to pass stool)
Fatty stools
What is diagnosis of cystic fibrosis
A positive sweat chloride test, absence of pancreatic enzymes, COPD
What is the care of cystic fibrosis
Increase calories and protein
Pulmonary therapy (chest physiotherapy, breathing exercises, aerosol therapy)
Medication (antibiotic, pancreatic enzymes, mucolytics, vitamins)
What is leukemia?
Lymphoblastic and myeloid
Lymphoblastic is the most common
What are s/s of leukemia?
Anemia (low Hgb)
Neutropenia (risk of infection, decreased WBC)
Thrombocytopenia (bleeding)
What is management of leukemia?
Infection control
Bleeding control
Chemotherapy
