What is the concept of family dynamics?
A family can provide a social network that acts as a potent support system providing practical, emotional, or social support.
How are family dynamics relate to 21st-century maternity nursing?
Health-seeking behaviors are based on cultural beliefs and values (usually passed down through family).
The pt family may need to be involved and can provide support for pt. Make sure to ask pt how they want their family involved
What is a nuclear family?
Husband, wife, and children live as an independent unit
What is extended family?
Grandparents, aunts, uncles, or other related by blood; can provide social, emotional, and financial support
What is a multigenerational family?
3+ generations of relatives in a house
What is a nonbiologic-parent family?
Children live independently in a foster or kinship care (ex: with grandparent)
What is a married-blended family?
Divorced and remarriage
What is a cohabiting-parent family?
Two unmarried parents
What is a single-parent family?
A parent who is unmarried and may or may not be living with other adults
What is a LGBTQIA family?
Same-sex couple

A culture loses identity and becomes a part of the dominate culture.

How can a nurse use cultural competence in relation to expanding family roles?
Provide specific education
Point pt and family towards related resources
Emphasis on wellness and empowerment for the family in an appropriate way
What are ethnicity cultural beliefs (hispanic, blacks, asian, european, and native american)?
H - maternal, won’t breastfeed w/in first days
B - delay prenatal care; support from women
A - men more hands-off, food preferences, sitting month
E - fathers involved; longer paternal and maternal leave
NA - multigenerational family involvement; newborns not handled as much; herbal supplements used often
What are the standards of practice and legal issues in delivery of care?
Joint Commission sets Medicare and Medicaid regulations
Standards of practice: AWHONN, NANN, ACOG, AAP, and INS
What is family nursing?
Assisting families with the changes occurring due to the pregnancy
Honoring and respecting each perspective, while listening to the woman
What are theoretical approaches to understanding families?
–> Family interview: have therapeutic conversations, inquire about relations in the room, genograms and ecomaps, asking therapeutic questions about expectations, challenges, and concerns, and offering commendment for the family.
–> Calgary FAmily Assessment Model: structural assessment (determine members of family), developmental assessment (what do you enjoy about life?), Functional assessment (reactions to daily living)
