Unit 1: Experimental Design and Graphing Data Flashcards
What is the purpose of science?
answer a question to help explain the world around us
What is the steps to the scientific method?
Observations → Questions → Research → Data-driven explanations
What does qualitative observation mean?
descriptive words (think quality)
What does quantitative observation mean?
measurable data (think quantity)
How do you create a Hypothesis?
A predication based on observations, Cause and Effect relationships
What does inference mean?
conclusion that is drawn based on observations
What does independent variable mean?
what experimenter deliberately manipulates or changes in experiment to determine its effect (also: the cause)
What does dependent variable mean?
what changes in response to the independent variable and measured as a result (also: the effect)
What is Experimental Group?
those that receive the independent variable (tested variable)
What is the Control Group?
group that does NOT receive the independent variable (made so we can erase all errors
What is constants?
variables held constant across all trials so that the only thing being tested is the IV,
What are repeated trials? Why do we do them?
run several trials of the experiment to make sure the results aren’t due to chance, to help eliminate errors, and to ensure data is precise
What is a Data Table?
keep data in organized form during investigation
What is a graph
present data later in organized way that is easy to read and allows readers to determine trends quickly
What is direct relationship?
(positive correlation): as independent increases, so does dependent
