Meiosis Notes 2 Flashcards
What is Meiosis required for?
for sexual reproduction b/c it produces haploid gamete cells.
What is Meiosis?
a kind of cell division that produces gametes by reducing the number of chromosomes by
half through the separation of homologous chromosomes.
What is sexual reproduction?
organisms that reproduce sexually (like humans) fuse the genetic information from two parents (gamete cells) to produce offspring that are a genetic mixture of both parents.
How many rounds of cell division is in meiosis?
2
During Meiosis 1, what is separted?
homologous chromosomes
What are the two parts of Meiosis 1 that cause a genetically unique chromosome?
Crossing over and random assortment
What is crossing over?
When homologous chromosomes swap portions of DNA, making the offspring not identical to the parent.
What is random assortment?
Not all maternal chromsomes go to one cell and not all paternal go to the other. It will always ensure unique cells.
What happens during Meiosis 2?
sister chromatids are separated.
