Photo/Cell Resp Flashcards
Autotroph
Producers, organisms that make their own food
Heterotroph
Organisms that can’t make their own food and, therefore, must consume
other organisms for nutrients
Catabolic reaction
Metabolic process in which molecules are broken down to smaller products
and energy is released (cellular respiration is catabolic)
Anabolic reaction
Metabolic process in which energy is absorbed in order to build up a bigger
product from smaller reactant molecules (photosynthesis is anabolic)
ATP
Energy storage molecule (energy is in a chemical form in the bonds
between phosphate groups)
Chlorophyll
Light absorbing pigment found in thylakoids of chloroplast
Photosynthesis
Anabolic reaction in which light energy from the Sun is converted to
chemical energy to make glucose (usable energy) for the cell
Chloroplast
Organelle found in plants where photosynthesis occurs
Mitochondria
Organelle found in plant AND animal cells where cell respiration occurs
Cell Respiration
Catabolic reaction in which glucose is broken down to produce a lot of ATP
energy molecules that are used for powering cellular processes
