Unit 1: Characteristics of Life Flashcards
What are the characteristics of lifes? (all ten)
Cellular Organization, Metabolism, Homeostatis, Response to Stimuli, Heredity, Reproduction, Growth and Development, and Evolution
What is the Cellular Organization?
Living things are composed of one or more cells.
What is unicellular?
entire organism only has one cell
What is muticellular?
builds much more complex organisms and cells can even differentiate into tissues and organ systems (like humans)
What is Homeostatsis?
maintain a stable internal environment
What is response to stumuli?
respond to the enviroment, a stimulus is a signal that leads to an organisim’s responses, ex: plants release toxic chemicals to stop insects from eating them
What is heredity?
store and transmit genetic information (DNA), all living things recieve traits from their parent organism.
what is reproduction?
produce new similar organisms through sexual or asexual reproduction
What is Metabolism?
obtain and use material and energy
what is evolution?
inherited change in the characterisitics of species over several generations
growth and development
increase in mass and complexity during an organism’s life cycle
What does an organelle mean? Example? Level?
means: a specialized part within a cell
ex: nucleus
level: 2
What does a molecule mean? Example? What level?
a group of atoms that are chemically bonded together.
ex: DNA
level: 1
What does a cell mean? Example? Level?
means: basic unit of life
ex: nerve cell
level: 3
What does a tissue mean? Example? Level?
means: a group of specialized cells that perform a similar function
ex: muscle tissue
level: 4
