Cause unknown
What is the pathophysiology?
Inflammatory bowel diswase affecting the large intestine/rectum
What are the signs or complaints from clients?
Abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea (20 stools/day), nausea/vomiting, weight loss
How is ulcerative colitis diagnosed?
Colonoscopy
What are the treatments?
Corticosteriods to reduce inflammation, removal of large intestine, removal of large intestine and rectum
What will the client need after surgery?
Ileostomy
What is the most appropriate diet for this condition?
Low fiber; teach clients to avoid fiber, fatty/greasy foods to decrease diarrhea. Teach clients to avoid alcohol (ETOH) and caffeine, but increase fluid intake
