U4 Interim #3 (Lower Appendicular Skeleton) Flashcards
Coxal bone
entire pelvis, 2 coxal bones total (L/R)
Illium
the broad, upper, and largest of the three bones composing the pelvis (Illiac Crest)
Ischium
paired bone of the pelvis, behind the pubis
Acetabulum
socket that the femur articulates with (similar to glenoid cavity)
Pubis
below the illium, pubic region
Pubis symphasis
joint inbetween the two pubis bones, functional during childbirth
Obturator foramen
a large opening in the hipbone between the pubis and ischium
Characteristics of male vs. female pelvis
female = wider/large, “hole” is larger vs. male = more round
Femur
upper bone, bone of the thigh
Greater trochanter
upper process at the top of the femur, provides connections
Lesser trochanter
lower process at the lower top part of the femur, also provides connections
Head/neck
top of femur, round, neck is below the head
Medial condyle
bottom/backside of the femur, condyle closest to the middle body
Later condyle
bottom/backside of the femur, condyle away from the middle body
Medial epicondyle
bump above the medial condyle, small condyle
Lateral epicondyle
bump above the lateral condyle, small condyle
Tibia
the shin
Tibial tuberosity
top of the tibia, bump that can be felt through skin, patella connects to the tibial tuberosity
Fibula
small bone lateral to the tibia, on the outside/away from the middle body
Tarsals
bones near the ankle (same as the carpals of the hand)
Metatarsals
bones above the tarsals
Phalanges
toes
Calcaneus
heel of the foot
Patella
kneecap
