A&P U2 Interim #2 (Connective Tissue) Flashcards
Types
1). Proper (dense & loose)
2). Cartilage
3). Bone
4). Blood
Similarities between connective tissues
1). Common origin (mesenchyme, fluid/loose embryonic tissue)
2). Diff. degrees of vascularity/blood flow (e.g. cartilage = avascular)
3). Mostly composed of inert extracellular matrix
What is the extracellular matrix composed of?
1). Ground substance- fills in spaces between cells
2). Fibers- provide support
Types of fibers
1). Collagen- tough and flexible, part of the skin
2). Elastic fiber- long and thin, snap it back in place, found in blood vessel walls/skin
3). Reticular fiber- used to protect organs, “fuzzy nets”
Blast
immature/forming
Cyte
mature/cell
Macrophages
Guard cells that patrol the connective tissue and consume invaders
Areolar
Proper loose connective tissue, most common, found under the epithelial tissue, wrapped around organs
Adipose
Proper loose connective tissue, fat tissue, insulates, mostly cells which store lipids/energy for later use, surrounds organs & eyes
Reticular
Proper loose connective tissue, “woven mess” of reticular fibers, framework of the spleen, holds blood & organs in place
Dense regular
tight bundles of collagen fibers all running parallel, tendons/ligaments
Dense irregular
fibers are thick and arranged erratically, dermis of the skin
Dense elastic
allows for more elasticity, around joints, connecting your vertabrae so your spine can curve & twist
Cartilage
used for tension and compression, no blood or nerves
Hyaline
Type of cartilage, glassy, provides support, connects ribs to sternum
