U3 A3 Technological developments Flashcards
efficiency
how well a business is uing its resources to acheive objectives
Effectivness
The degree to which a business acomplishes its objective they set out to achieve.
–>uaslly means meeting customer expectations to then achieve higher customer satisfaction, higher sales and higher profits.
High can effectiveness be done?
-high quality outputs
-better features
-fewer defects
-Faster deliveries
Competitiveness
-It means providing outputs at lower prices or higher quality (or both) than rivals
- Increasing efficiency and effectiveness improves a business’s competitiveness
-Greater efficency: business costs are lower, so lower prices can be passed to customers, beating competitors on price
-Greater effectivness: Higher quality outputs, beating competitors on quality
Links to operations management
A business should be constantly asking whether the operations strategies that have been implemented or are about to be improve the effectiveness of the production process (achieving stated objectives).
Likewise, operations strategies are about improving the efficiency of the production process (how well the business has used resources in achieving its objectives).
Technological Developments in manufacturing and Services business
Manufacturing business:
-Automated production line
-Robotics
-Computer aided design (CAD)
-Computer aided manufacturing (CAM)
-AI
-On-line services
Services Industries
-Computer aided design (CAD)
-AI
-On-line services
Automated production line
comprises the use of machinery and equipment arranged in a sequence with components added to good as it proceeds through each step, with the process being controlled by computers.
Real-world application: post office, Yakult, Cadbury
robotics
are highly specialised from of tech that are capable of performing complex tasks. They are often used in repetitive tasks and can be used in both manufacturing and service industries.
Advantages and disadvantages for Automated Production line+Robotics
Advantages:
-Businesses is able to produce goods at a faster rate
-reduces the need for labour
-Precision, accuracy and speed is guaranteed
Disadvantages:
-can be expensive
-costly to maintain and replace
-employee training may be required
Efficiency and effectiveness of Automated production line and Robotics
Efficiency:
- fewer human resources
-performs task quicker than human
-reducing wastage due to less errors and improved in accuracy
Effectiveness:
-improve safety
-Increased quality–> which leads to a better competitive advantage
Computer-aided design (CAD)
computerised tool that allows a business to create product possibilities from a series of input parameters.–> a draft before it starts productions
Real-world application: architects, engineers.
advantages and Disadvantages of CAD
advantages
- product designs can be produced at a faster rate
-design can be reviewed from multiple angles
-2D or 3D versions of the products can be produced and changes can be made before a prototype is produced.
disadvantages
- computer software crashes
-cost of the software–> to fix and implement
-loss of jobs as fewer staff are required
Effectiveness and Efficiency of CAD
Efficiency:
-fewer resources
-material planning
Ability to view product from different angles and opportunity for feedback
Effectiveness:
-making adjustments prior to production (meet consumer needs)
-3D vwiing of the product and getting a realistic perspective.
Computer-aided manufacture (CAM)
The use of software to direct and control manufacturing process.
Real-world application- 3D printing, robotics in construction
Efficiency and Effectiveness of CAM
efficiency
-speed up production
-fewer human resources
- production with fewer errors
effectiveness
-product quality
-customisation
