Autocratic
one where the manager tells the staff what decisions have been made
Characteristics of Autocratic
- manger motivates staff through threats and disciplinary action
-Communication is one way
-Managers expect compliance and obedience from staff
-Centralised decision-making
When is Autocratic effective?
-In times of crisis such as meeting an unexpected deadline
-Approach can be effective when team members do not know each other well or when individuals lack skills and knowledge.
Advantages of Autocratic
-Communication is clear ensuring employees understand the tasks
-No uncertainty- directions and procedures are clearly defined
-Decisions are made quickly
-Employee roles and expectations are detailed and precise so management can monitor performance.
Disadvantages of Autocratic
-No employee input allowed, employees do not get to develop their skills and do not feel valued
-Conflict, disagreements and tension could arise due to employees competing against each other for manager approval
-Job satisfaction decreases which impacts staff turnover and absenteeism.

One where management attempts to sell decisions to employees.
Characteristics of Persuasive Management Skills
-Authority and control remain centralised but management attempts to seek to make employees accept the objective and plans of the business–> work to convince employees that decisions are made for their best interest
-Communication is one way and staff are allowed to share ideas
Advantages of Persuasive management skills
-managers gain trust and support through persuasion
-Workers if they feel their feelings are considered may approve business more positively.
-acceptance of negative situations when the benefits of decisions are explained.
Disadvantage of Persuasive management skills
-Attitude and trust remain negative. employees fail to give full support to management
-Communication is still poor, limited top-to-bottom, one-way
-Employees remain frustrated due to being denied full participation in the decision-making process.

Consultative management style
One where the manager consults employees before making decisions
when is persuasive management style effective?
used to perfrom both simple and hard tasks
-best when the task is urgent and time limited.managers is still able to make quick decisions
Characteristics of Consultative Management Style
-seeks the options of employees, holds info-sharing meetings and recognises good performances
-Two-way communication
-believes employees can be motivated through their greater involvement in the decision-making process.

when the operating procedure is to be introduced or some business change implemented
Advantages of Consultative Management Style
-Large pool of ideas to choose from
-increased motivation when staff is involved, tasks completed more effectively with better results
-employees are more likely to take ownership due to involvement.
Disadvantages of Consultative Management Style
-More time-consuming
-some employees may feel undervalued if their idea is overlooked
-some issues are not suitable for widespread consultations, with inconsistent process staff may feel confused about their role.
Participative Management styles
One where managers unite staff to make decisions together
Characteristics of Participative Management styles
-Two way comuunication
managers recognise the strengths of the staff involved and involve them in all stages of the decision-making process

Disadvantages Participative Management Styles
-Can be time-consuming to implement decisions
- Quality of decisions can suffer due to compromises being made
-Internal conflict arises due to the range of ideas being shared
Laissez-faire management style
One where the employees assume total responsibility for and control workplace operations
Characteristics of Laissez-faire management style
-Management has no central role or decision-making power
-management still sets objectives and is responsible for the performance of the business, but employees take responsibility for achieving business objective
-Completely decentralised Management skill
When is the Laissez-faire management style?
Most effective for creative work or research, with employees who are highly talented or qualified in the tasks to be performed and where minimal supervision and direction is required.
Advantages of laissez-faire management style?
-Employees feel sense of ownership, which can improve morale and motivation to achieve outcomes
-Encourages teamwork and creativity
-Communication is completely open, and ideas are both discussed and shared
Disadvantages of the Laissez-faire management style?
-Complete loss of control by management.
-No control or direction means there is potential for misuse of the business’s resources, including time and money
-This style can breed personal conflicts, where individuals do not cooperate or wish to implement only their own ideas.
