we are driven by money and possession
we are driven by abstract things: praise, pride, status
Drive to bond

-collaborate as a team
-Be recognised as individuals who are more than just a worker
-form personal relationships at work
Drive to learn
Include our desire to staisfy our curiosity, to learn new skills and to explore the world around us
-we are driven by challenge
-we want new and interesting experiences
-we get bored only doing the same thing and want to increase out skills and knowledge.
drive to defend
the desire to remove threats to our safety and security to protect what we regarded as ‘ours’
Drive to defends the two pionts
- Employees will become unmotivated if they feel unsafe or threatened. they will be driven to defend themselves rather than to work towards objectives. this means managers should not activate this drive.
2.Employees may be motivated to achieve objectives if it helps defend their job.E.G “If you don’t get four new clients next month you will be fired”. This means managers may want to deliberately activate this drive sometimes.
Strengths of four drive theory
-Managers can target the different drives of specific groups of employees
-The manager can attempt to motivate all employees by supporting all four drives simultaneously.
disadvantages
-employees may not value all drives equally
-determining the specific needs of specific groups/individuals could be time-consuming
