Types of LTM Flashcards
what are the 2 types of LTM?
explicit & implicit
explicit meaning
declarative = ‘i know that’
implicit meaning
procedural = ‘i know how to do that’ - skill based knowledge acquired through repetition & practice, resulting in automatic performance
2 parts of explicit
episodic & semantic
episodic
time & place of events & associated emotions
semantic
knowledge about the world like facts, functions of items, language, social customs, etc
EVALUATION strengths
SUPPORT FROM BRAIN SCANS
- memories for a particular event may be located in different areas but connected by the hippocampus as 1 episodic memory
- semantic = temporal lobe
- procedural = cerebellum & motor cortex
HM CASE STUDY
- hippocampus damage = no new LTM but could access previous LTM
- could still acquire new procedural
- corkin (2002) mirror drawing task = no memory he could do the task but improved each time
- counterargument = case study so unique & not replicable
EVALUATION limitation
CONFLICTING NEUROIMAGING EVIDENCE
- buckner & petersen (1996) = reviewed location of semantic & episodic
- concluded that semantic was in the left of prefrontal cortex & episodic in the right
- other studies say differently
- challenges any neurophysiological evidence for memory due to poor agreement on the location of each part
