Q

What is episodic memory?

A

Our ability to recall events from our lives
They are time stamped - we know when they took place
They are single memories
We have to make a conscious effort to recall them

Q

What is semantic memory

A

Our knowledge of the world
This includes facts
It is not time stamped
Requires conscious effort to recall

Q

What is procedural memory

A

This is memory for motor actions and skills.
These memories can be recalled without any effort

Q

What clinical evidence is there to show the types of long term memory? - Clive

A

Clive’s episodic memory was impaired as a consequence of amnesia
However his semantic and procedural was intact
For eg he knew how to play piano but couldn’t remember his wedding day

Q

How do brain scans provide evidence of the types of LTM

A

Experimenter tulving got his participants to preform memory tasks while his brain was scanned by a PET scanner.
The episodic and semantic were recalled from the prefrontal cortex in the brain
And procedural memory is linked to the cerebellum

Q

What disproves there being 3 different types of memory

A

Cohen says there is only two. Episodic and semantic memories stores together and is called declarative memory
However procedural are non declarative
Case studies are hard to generalise
