Caregiver-infant Interactions Flashcards
What is reciprocity
Interactions between infant and caregiver responding to each others signals
During these, they take turns as people do in a conversation
What is alert phases
Where babies have alert phases , in which they signal that they are ready for a spell of interaction
What is interactional synchrony
Where people carry out the same action at the same time
Their emotions mirror each others
- its a critical role in developmental outcomes
- Isabella found that high levels of synchrony means better mother-infant interactions
Supporting evidence
The babies who had the most reciprocal interactions and the most synchrony had secure attachments with their mothers
-has supporting evidence
-found that infants mimic adult facial expressions and hand movements
-shows that it aids attachment
Disproving evidence
-cultural variations
It’s shown that in Kenya , mothers have little interaction with their infants however still have strong attachments - secure
Weakens the fact that caregiver interactions are needed for attachment formations
-babies are hard to observe
Can’t be asked questions and its hard to interpret their behaviour. Young babies have immobile bodies which means that little gestures may not mean that the interactions have special meanings
What is attachment
A two way emotional bond between two individuals in which each individual sees the other as essential for their own emotional security
