The Working Memory Model Flashcards
What’s the central executive?
Controls attention and directs information to slave systems
Has a low capacity
multi modal coding
Phonological loop
Coding is auditory and verbal information
The inner ear - holds onto words that are heard
The inner voice - holds onto information by repeating it
Limited capacity of 2 seconds worth of info
Visuospatial sketch pad
Coding is visual information
Visual cache - colour and information
Inner scribe - the space between objects
Episodic buffer
Where information is stored and integrated
What are the strengths of the WMM
Baddeley- proves there are separate stores
Gave two tasks to do
Visual and verbal - good answer because there are separate stores
Verbal and Verbal - poorly answered because the phonological loop is overwhelmed
Shallice
KF had an accident and his STM verbal was affected but STM visual wasn’t
This shows there’s two STM stores
Has practical applications for example its used to help children with impaired memory
Imcreaing internal validity
What’s the disadvantage of the WMM
The central executive is too vague
It’s the most important store however we have no indication how it works
There should be components within
