Q

What is the sensory register

A

Receives a huge amount of information through the five senses but most of it receives little to no attention and is lost
Sensory register can only hold information for a short amount of time.
Information is only transferred to short term memory if attention is paid.

Q

What is short term memory

A

It’s the events in the present or immediate past
Codes acoustically

Q

What is long term memory

A

They are events which have happened in the more distant past
It is coded semantically
Forgetting is because of failure of retrieval

Q

Research supporting the multi store mode

A

Glazner and cunitz
They provide clear support for existence of the STM and LTM as distinct memory stores
Procedure- hear a list of words and recall immediately
Findings - the middle bit of last had the worst recall , showing there are two memory stores

Q

A weakness of the multi store memory model

A

Short term is too simplistic
MSM shows that there’s only one type of STM
However , amnesia patients show this is not true , for example patients were studied and it is shown that verbal material stm os poor however visual stm was unaffected
This is a weakness as it suggests there is more than one memory store for STM.

Q

Another weakness for the MSM

A

It overemphasises the importance for rehearsal
It says the more you rehearse the more likely you are to transfer information to long term memory
However this is not always the case as sometimes rehearsal doesn’t lead to LTM and sometimes things go into LTM without rehearsal.

A

Clive had an accident, however, he had amnesia he remembered how to play piano but forgot his wedding day
