infeference Flashcards
interference
when two pieces of information conflict with eachother resulting in forgetting one or both
proactive interference
when older memory affects the recall of a new memory
retro active interference
when newer memory affects the recall of an older memory
supporting evidence
participants had to learn a list of 10 words until they could remember it
the two conditions were learning synonyms and learning antonyms
similar words were recalled the most poorly
what’s a strength and weakness of the 10 word recall experiment
strength - there’s a wealth of supporting evidence . this experiment has been repeated loads of times with consistent results
weakness- there’s artificial material used which decreases the internal valdity
what’s real life reaseach on similar events (interference)
players were asked to remember the names of the teams they played
the results shown that recall did not depend on how long ago the matches were but how many matches were played
a limitation of interference
there are other variables which affect forgetting not just similar material
for example when participants are given cues the recall rose again to 70%.
however at the start of the list when similar material was given the recall decreased .
