Social Change Flashcards
What is social change?
It is where whole societies change their behaviour
What are ways in which the minority influence the majority?
Drawing attention to the issue
Consistency of position
Commitment
Snowball affect
NSI - normative social influence
How does commitment help minorities persuade majorities
They draw the majorities attention to an issue foe example in the civil right movement black people would get onto whites peoples busses even though they would get beaten for it which shows commitment
How does consistency bring social change
Being consistent means expressing arguments repeatedly. This helps the minorities become more influential as its shown in the civil rights movement when they consistently did marches to get across their point of view
How does drawing attention cause social change
For example in the civil rights movement they did marches to raise awareness and showcase their viewpoint to the majority
What is the argumentation principle
It’s the principle that if there’s risks involved then views are taken more seriously
What is the snowball affect
It means that if more and more of the majority is moving toward minority position then more people will gradually pay attention to minority viewpoint until it reaches tipping point
How does nsi help in social change
If people are led to believe that the majority are behaving in a certain way they will conform to gain social approval and avoid being seen as socially deviant
What supports gradual commitment
Milligrams study where if change starts off as small and gradually increase people are less likely to resist the bigger one
What research supports normative influences in social change
Nolans study
He put posters put to convince neighbourhoods that people are using less energy
This shown a significant decrease in energy
This is a strength as it shows nsi can lead to social change
