retrieval faliure Flashcards
what is retrieval failure
when we don’t have the necessary cues to access memory . it’s the theory that when information is placed into memory there are cues that go along with it . therefore cues can trigger memory
encoding specificity principle - that cues must be presents when information is learnt and recalled ( encoding and retrieval)
context dependent forgetting- when we learn something and recall something in the same context (place) increasing remembering information
state dependent forgetting- is where information is encoded and recalled in two different emotions
what is baddeley experiment which supports retrieval failure in context dependent forgetting
learn and recall a list of words either under water or on land.
the people who recalled and learnt the words in the same place had better memory
what is the experiment which supports state dependent forgetting
gave participants hay fever tablets which made them drowsy
sound that when participants encoded and recalled information in the same state information was recalled better
this is a state as it shows memory is increased with cues
what’s two limitations of context dependent forgetting
there must be a significant difference in context
this is a limitation was it shows that absence of cue only affects memory when you can test it in a certain way for example when context is different at learning and recall
As well as this another limitation is when the context dependent experiment was repeated. The findings show that when recognition was used the performance didn’t differ despite the different contexts
This is a limitation as it shows the lack of cues only affect memory when tested in a certain way
