Q

how is STM coded and LTM

A

STM coded acoustically - through sound
LTM coded semantically - through meaning

Q

research on coding

A

badddley - gave different lists of words to four groups of participants to remember
group one - acoustically similar
group two - acoustically dissimilar
group three - semantically similar
group four - semantically dissimilar
short term memory - when asked to recall words straight away, acoustically similar words had worst recall showing that STM is coded acoustically
long term memory- when asked to recall semantically similar words , they had the worst recall showing that LTM is coded semantically

Q

What is s strength for baddeleys study?

A

Lab experiment allowed manipulation of the type of words presented to participants and controlled extraneous variables such as noise levels
This is a strength as we can be sure that coding in STM is acoustic and LTM is semantic

Q

What is a weakness of baddeleys study?

A

Unclear how long we need to wait to test the LTM . We only waited 20 minutes , which we may have needed to wait longer as there are much larger gaps in real life , putting to question whether LTM coding is actually semantic
