Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What is social support?
Where a member of the group acts as a model and breaks the unanimity of the group by stating different point of views or opinions. A dissenter is a person who breaks the unanimity of the group. This person will act as a model for others showing them the consequences and breaking pressure to fit in.
How does asch research support social support?
One of his variations he used a dissenter to break the unanimity of the group and found that conformity rates dropped. The confederate said a different answer and the right one.
This shows that social support helps people resist social influence
Another variation was when the confederate broke the unanimity even with eye problems , it still encouraged others to also say the correct answer and resist social influence.
What variation of milligram supports social support?
Milgrams variation was that when the participant was put in a group of two confederates which refused to give shocks to the student , this encouraged the participant to also refuse to give shocks. This is because the consequences were shown and the person was less likely to obey.
What is internal locus of control?
They believe
They can control events in their life
What happens to them is consequence of their own actions
They are more likely to resist social influence
What is external locus of control?
They feel as though things just happen to them
They’re less likely to resist social influence - more likely to conform
They believe in luck and destiny
Take less personal responsibility
What research did crowne et al complete that supports locus of control?
Measured whether people had internal or external LOC and found that internals conformed less
Another one is milgrams was repeated and internal and external LOC was measured. He found that internals were more likely to disobey
What contradictory evidence disproves LOC
Twenge - found that people are becoming more external LOC aswell as more resistant to social influence
This goes against locus of control explanations
Aswell as this there could be other variables which explain resistance to social influence such as individuality.
