types of immunity Flashcards
passive
antibodies that are transferred from an external source
active
antibodies and memory cells are made by an individuals own immune system
artificial
immunity acquired through medical intervention
natural
immunity acquired without medical intervention
Purpose of vaccination?
Vaccines activate the immune system to produce antibodies against pathogens without requiring the person to actually develop the disease
why are boosters given?
because t and b cells can die after a long period of time
why is the secondary antibody response faster?
the memory cells recognise the antigen and quickly generate a large number of antibodies and memory cells
why does the primary antibody response not produce as many antibodies?
humoral response takes long - the apcs have to find the t cells. so when a moderate number of antibodies and memory cells are formed, the humoral response takes place. does not have time to make more antibodies
herd immunity
When a high percentage of a population is vaccinated
