nucleic acids Flashcards
nucleotides
consist of a pentose (5 carbon) , a nitrogen base and a phosphate group
nucleic acid
class of macromolecule that contains DNA and RNA. All nucleic acids are polymers made of nucleotide monomers
DNA
double stranded nucleic acid chain made up of nucleotides. Carries the instructions for proteins which are required for cell and organism survival.
RNA
single stranded nucleic acid chain made up of nucleotides. includes mrna, rrna, trna
ribose sugar
in rna
deoxyribose sugar
in dna
phosphodeister bond
a strong covalent bond linking a five carbon sugar to a phosphate
antiparallel
describes how each strand runs in an opposite direction to the other. one runs in a 3 prime to 5 prime direction the other in a 5 to 3.
complementary base pairing
describes which base pairs form hydrogen bonds with each other. G-C, A-T or A-U (in rna)
messenger rna
carries genetic information from the nucleus to the ribosomes for protein synthesis. dna is transcribed into mrna during the process of transcription
transfer rna
delivers specific amino acids to the ribosome after recognising specific nucleotide sequences on mRNA. foldings in the strand are caused by hydrogen bonding
rrna
ribosomal rna, makes up a ribosome
